The pilot lights, then drops out seconds later. Or the igniter clicks and nothing catches. Both usually point at millivolts, not gas supply. A standing pilot makes its own tiny voltage at the thermocouple or thermopile. As those parts age, output sags. The valve stops seeing enough to hold open. That gets metered, not guessed.

Sealed direct-vent inserts in 1970s–2000s tract homes, condos and townhomes fail their own way. Lint and dust clog the ODS pilot hood. Spiders nest inside burner orifices.
