My townhome has a metal fireplace, not brick — does it still need sweeping?

Yes, and it needs inspecting more than it needs sweeping. Most of the two- and three-story townhomes and duplexes built here from the 1980s through the 2000s have factory-built metal fireboxes venting through a framed chase with a sheet-metal cover on top. Those units are now roughly 25 to 40 years old. Light ambiance burning means little creosote, but the firebox panels, the gasket seals, and the chase top all age on their own schedule. We clean what's there and then spend most of the visit on the metal itself, because that's where these systems actually fail.

Why does my chase cover keep rusting out when my neighbor inland is fine?

Salt. Onshore wind carries spray off the beach and lays it on everything facing west, and the closer you are to the water and the Esplanade, the faster it works. Chase covers and caps corrode quicker in Redondo Beach than anywhere else we work in the South Bay. Once a cover rusts through or the storm collar seal around the flue pipe lets go, water runs straight down inside the chase into framing you can't see. Leaking chase tops and failed storm collars are the single most common thing homeowners call us about here.

What makes one Redondo Beach chimney cost more to service than another?

Housing era, mostly. The 1920s-40s cottages and bungalows in North Redondo tend to have small masonry fireplaces that are quick and straightforward to sweep and inspect. Townhome metal systems take longer because we're evaluating a manufactured appliance and its chase, and access on a three-story unit with a steep or tight roof adds time. If corrosion has taken the cover or the cap, that's replacement work priced separately from the sweep. We'll tell you what we found and what it takes to fix before we touch anything.

How soon can you get out here?

Depends on the season. From roughly November through February everyone remembers their fireplace at once and the calendar tightens, so booking a week or two ahead is smart. Spring through early fall we're usually out within a few days. If you've got water coming down inside the chase or staining on the drywall around the fireplace, say so when you call — active leaks get moved up, since the damage keeps going while you wait.

Can you come the same day?

Sometimes, outside the winter rush, if a slot opens or you're near a job we're already on. During the November-to-February stretch, same-day is unlikely for a routine sweep. What we can often do same-day is get eyes on an emergency: a leak in the chase, a cap that's blown loose in the wind, or a fireplace you don't want to light until someone's looked at it.
