My fireplace hasn't been used in 20+ years. Is it safe to light this winter?

Not until someone looks at it. That's the single most common call we get in Compton — a bungalow or a 1950s-60s tract house where the fireplace has sat cold for decades and someone wants a fire on a cold night. Long-idle masonry chimneys usually have some combination of animal nests, debris in the smoke chamber, dried-out mortar joints, and a flue nobody has ever swept. Two big earthquakes, 1933 and 1987, ran through this area, and cracked clay tile or shifted brick from that kind of movement doesn't announce itself from the living room. An inspection before the first fire is the whole point, not an upsell.

Can you do it same day?

Sometimes, especially midweek and outside the winter rush. If your chimney is a straightforward original brick fireplace and the job is a sweep plus inspection, that's usually one visit. What doesn't finish same day is masonry work — repointing deteriorated mortar, rebuilding a failed crown, or addressing cracked flue tile. Those need materials, cure time, and a scheduled return. What makes one Compton job cost more than another?

The main driver is how long the chimney has been neglected. A flue that's been swept in recent memory is quick. A decades-idle stack packed with nesting material and creosote takes real time, and sometimes a cap has to come off or a cleanout has to be opened first.
