I only light a fire a handful of nights in January. Do I really need a sweep?

Probably not an annual full sweep, no. With the light burning most Lawndale homes see — a few evenings between December and February — creosote builds slowly in these small single-wide fireboxes. What actually matters here is an inspection: checking that the cap and spark arrestor are still intact, that nothing has moved into the flue since last winter, and that the masonry above the roofline hasn't started shedding. Why do caps and spark arrestors keep rusting out on my roof?

Steel arrestors on these 1940s and 50s brick chimneys corrode through at the mesh first, then the cap plate goes. Once the mesh opens up, birds and rodents get in, and nesting debris in the smoke chamber is one of the most common things we pull out of Lawndale flues. Stainless replacements hold up far better in this air than plain galvanized.

Can you come out the same day?

Sometimes, especially outside December through February when demand is flat here.
