Why your gas fireplace clicks but won't stay lit

The usual symptoms sort into a few causes. Pilot lights, then drops when you release the knob. That means a weak thermocouple or a dirty pilot hood. Igniter sparks, no flame. Often a plugged pilot orifice. Spider webs and dust do this. Yellow, smoking flame tips with black film on the glass usually means logs sitting over burner ports, or blocked ports, not a broken valve.
